I have 3 raw wedges - 46, 52 bent to 53, and a 60. They are great clubs but lately I am wondering if my next purchase of wedges should be raw or not. I consistently have to swap out my ProV1X for a new ball mid round because my wedges leave rusty groove rips or tears in the cover of the ball. Obviously my chrome 718 MBs dont do this to the ball so I am wondering if these rips in the cover happen with all new wedges since youll generally pinch the ball a little more with wedges and short irons than you do with longer irons with more of a sweeping swing. Has anyone played both raw or plated and have any insight or experience with both and have a preference? I am going from a 3 wedge setup in the near future to a 4 wedge setup in 46, 50, 56, 60 to dial in my gapping at the bottom of my bag and removing my 3i to make room so just looking for some conversation and feedback. I know some pros still play raw wedges but they also get new balls by the hundreds for free.

Try using a chrome tour or z star and see what happens. Unfortunately that's the price we pay for compressing shots and spin.
Being raw has nothing to do with it. I've shredded balls in one swing with my Tour Chrome 46° Vokey.

It’s about the swing. You are correct, most, if not all, are using raw finish. It is their preference for feel but also allows for custom grinding in the tour truck. While they do get a bunch of free balls, they are not taking a ball out of play after a fairway or bunker shot which means the covers are not being torn by them. They actually create their spin with a shallow trajectory and work hard to lower their wedge spin to create stopping power without spinning back away from pins.

For the most part, thats the only reason I retire a ball during the round because the cover rips or you get sand between the ball and clubface and scuffs it. left dash are notoriously bad for ripping since they are a little firmer and dont "give" quite as much as the V or X. I do enjoy the rust on my raw wedges but if im updating from the SM7s to the 10s maybe ill consider some of the normal finishes and save 40 a club
