Titleist 716 AP2 irons

    Greetings all,

    A quick preamble to my question: I am 42 years old and carry a 4.5 handicap index. I currently play miz MP-53 irons TTDG S300 shafts, 2 degs. up, standard length, standard lie angle, 4-PW. They are fantastic irons but their best days are behind them. Therefore, I have decided to purchase new irons. It is also without question that I will get properly fit by a professional. 'Nuff said.

    I have tested stock versions of the 716 AP2. Different feel, etc. but nonetheless solid irons which I undoubtedly will play for 6-8 years pending durability.

    With my MP-53 irons, I have a deep undercut cavity in the 4-7 irons. Aside from forgiveness which is #1, my biggest concern when switching irons is ball flight in the 4 thru 6 as I have always been challenged to hit the ball high enough in the longer irons.

    My question: Do the 716 AP2 irons have an undercut cavity in the 4-7 irons? While this isn't something that will ultimately decide which set I choose, peace of mind is important to me. After all, 50% of golf is 90% mental ... or however the saying goes. I am inquiring only about an undercut cavity, please do not recommend a mixed set with either the AP1 or TMB in longer irons with AP2 in the mid/short irons. I have already been down that road.

    Yes, I have a set and I think you will be very happy! However, shaft choice will affect this more than you think...you may wish to consider Project X Steel Shafts...also ball choice will affect this, what ball are you playing?

    I recently went to all 14 clubs Titleist and the irons were that last thing to come in. I must say that the Ap2 are by far the best looking and best hitting iron i've ever had. Make sure that your go for a fitting as what i thought were my specs turned out not to be. So far i am very pleased with performance and durability. Greqat purchase....

    Hi Matt,

    As I understand it, and perhaps one of the TT Concierges/Staff may be able to find more detailed information about the AP2's, the AP2's do have a slight cavity slot in the back of the club which is designed to redistribute the mass of the club. This as I understand it, is to foster a higher ball flight, in particular for the longer irons.

    I currently play the 714 Model of AP2's and I appreciate that on most normal shots (good lie, full swing, etc.), my trajectory is pretty high for a long iron - higher than I used to get the ball.

    It seems to me that regarding the MP53's, I don't think you can compare it with the AP2s as the MP53s are more of a game improvement iron in the same vein as the AP1s (ie: good player characteristics with emphasis on game improvement/ball flight).

    In short, I believe that the 716 AP2s long iron design should help you get the ball up in the air on full shots, normal swing/lie, etc.

    However, go try a set of the long irons out at one of your golf stores like Goldsmith, etc. And then perhaps go for a full fitting of the irons where you can try them with different shaft options that can be paired to your swing -- it really does make a big difference.

    I have tried a myriad of shafts throughout the years. When I wrote that I will get professionally fitted, I meant it. Obviously, a fitter and I will experiment with different shafts. Shaft fitting is part of a fitting process or at least it has been my experience in the past.

    To answer a question posed back at me: I play the Titleist ProV1. No, not the X, the original.

    To be candid, categorizing/labeling makes no difference to me because I do not worry about which irons fall into what skill set (game improvement, players, etc.). I play what works best and feels best. However, it is my understanding that MP stands for Miz Players. When comparing head sizes, lofts, top lines, soles, offset and lengths the MP's definitely fall much, much more in line with an AP2.

    I appreciate the responses.

    Hi Matt R. -- I understand your comment and rationale about the MP 53's. My comment about their category is purely in reference to the design characteristics, particularly as it relates to the use of cavity slots or undercut slots such as those in the MP's and why it may not directly compare to the AP2 and the design characteristics that it employs.

    The photo I attached is of the 714 AP2 -- I could not locate one of the 716. The photo suggests that there may be a "slight cavity" design incorporated into the iron.

    I had similar issue's with long irons from the deck, have played DG & PX. I recently changed to the KBS C-Taper lite 110g (mid traj. shaft) and it has helped a lot. Make sure to ask fitter to try some mid to higher launching iron shafts.
